Infection control issues in the clinical area

In the US the Centre of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that healthcare associated infections cause or contribute to 99,000 deaths each year.

In Europe it is documented to be 25,000 deaths per year.

Infection Prevention and Control (IP&C) is a priority for anyone working in the healthcare service. Whether in an acute hospital or a community health organisation, all are striving to ensure they follow best practice and protect patients and staff from the spread of infection.

In clinical areas where carts, beds, stretchers and furniture move from patient bed space to patient bed space, or clinical area to clinical area, there is a real risk of cross contamination.

We know that gram-negative micro-organisms can survive for a long time on surfaces in the hospital and can enter the body through wounds, catheters, and ventilators. This in combination with the lowered immune system in many hospitalised patients makes cross infection a never ending risk.

Some key considerations therefore in any product design are to have easy to clean surfaces, ease of access and visibility of all areas to be cleaned, there should be no areas to harbour micro-organisms and there should be additional protection options for high risk areas.

To add to the design features on our products we can also offer added protection on most of them with the addition of Microban®

Microban® is a product that is added to the polymers or materials while they are being processed, without changing the actual production process, to inhibit the growth of a vast range of bacteria (or fungi) such as those listed below. This inhibition lasts for the lifetime of the product.

  • Listeria monocytogenes
  • Escherichia coli 0157
  • Salmonella Enteritis
  • Staphylococcus aureus
  • Aspergillus Niger

It has been demonstrated that Microban® is capable of reducing bacteria by up to 99.9% on surfaces.

In many of our products Microban® can be impregnated into the plastics during the moulding process; it is incorporated into the structure of the polymer and evenly distributed throughout the mould and on the surface. Thanks to this even distribution Microban ® is present and effective everywhere in the product, for the entire life of the product. This is available in the entire stretcher, cot and cart lines.

In other product lines we use aluminium with completely removable internal parts - these parts can be immersed or sterilised for cleaning before easy re assembling - these solutions are available in the technical storage solutions, baby storage and baby changing sections.
